Director of Developer Relations at Aptible

Remote (USA(

About the job

Aptible has built out a relatively large customer base filled with highly engaged software developers who communicate with Aptible via Zendesk and joint Slack channels. So far we haven't invested in Developer Relations outside of our support team, which is comprised mostly of developers, but we know that Developer Relations is critical to our continued success. Our small but mighty team has built a strong foundation with our customers via providing best in class support, ending most months with a 100% customer satisfaction score, but we know there's a lot more outside of support we can do to build better relationships. We’re looking for a leader for Developer Relations who will help deepen our relationships with current and prospective developer customers.

Our product roadmap in 2022 is filled with the most ambitious features we’ve ever built and the most requested features by Aptible customers and non-customers alike. We’d like our new head of Developer Relations to help us expand our developer community around our new product development and our mission, specifically by prioritizing and leading on initiatives such as: open sourcing our product code, open sourcing our company and company culture, representing Aptible at meetups and events, hosting conferences, online community engagement, and of course creating exceptional documentation and learning materials.

All this to say, we take open and transparent communication as well as advocacy for our developer customers seriously. Our entire team is aligned around the primary importance of Developer Relations to Aptible’s future, and we’d like to find a Developer Relations leader who will help lead our company’s engagement with current and future customers.

Your Impact
We believe that one pillar of any Developer Relations strategy is phenomenal documentation, and you’ll lead a refactor and expansion of our docs that are currently used by thousands of developers, to better serve those who are new to Aptible
An important extension of documentation is authentically useful, clear, and high quality guides and learning materials aimed at helping our developer audience deploy cloud infrastructure securely, and you will ensure we are always producing new materials for our audience
We’re relaunching our developer community after years of underinvestment, and you’ll lead all aspects of the community with the goal of engaging the thousands of current and all future Aptible customers and users
You’ll work closely with our (new!) marketing team to help us build out all things marketing to developers
We have not historically invested in events, but we’d like our Developer Relations leader, working with marketing and others at Aptible, to help us improve our events calendar as investment is warranted. This includes webinars, video meetups, conferences, etc.
You’ll work closely with and, over time, help manage our customer reliability engineering team, who have been the front line of Zendesk and Slack support and as we move forward, will invest more of their time in Developer Relations (documentation, content creation, community-building, etc.)
You’ll work closely with product and engineering to create a two-way conversation about our roadmap and functionality with our developer community
As we grow, you’ll build our Developer Relations team with the goal of engaging our entire community of developers. Our ambitious long term goal is that we hope to engage with and become helpful to every software developer in the world through our commercial or open source efforts, and you’ll lead the team that will lead Aptible towards achieving this goal

Your Strengths
You are an experienced engineer, and ideally you are familiar with DevOps, including deploying containers, clusters, and working in the cloud. Bonus points if you are familiar with DevSecOps, security, or information security compliance frameworks and regulations such as SOC 2, ISO 27001, HITRUST, PCI, FedRAMP, and HIPAA.
You are a prolific writer and content creator. You have a strong portfolio of some or all of: technical documentation, blog posts, videos, podcasts, etc.
You have built and/or led Developer Relations teams, ideally for a similar DevOps or infrastructure product
You have highly engaged with and have helped organize developer communities, and you’re comfortable engaging on forums, on Github, etc.

Our Interview Process
We seek to make the experience of interviewing with us as delightful, efficient, fair, respectful, and transparent as possible.

A typical process at Aptible might include the following steps, and takes approximately 3 Weeks to complete. We try to move as quickly as possible, but if you have any time constraints, please let us know and we'll do our best to accommodate.
1) An Introduction to Aptible with the Hiring Manager (30 Minutes via Zoom)
2) A Discussion-Based Interview with an Aptible Team Member (45-60 Minutes via Zoom)
3) A Take-Home Work Sample Exercise (NB: You will be compensated for completing this.)
4) A Discussion-Based Interview with an Aptible Team Member (45-60 Minutes via Zoom)

We believe that the Work Sample Exercise is an important part of the process, in that it gives you the opportunity to demonstrate your skills in a concrete way. We take the time to design these exercises such that they: a) give you a view into the actual work you'd do at Aptible, and b) are standardized, so every candidate is evaluated using the same criteria.

Lastly, Aptible conducts calls with 3-4 References, ideally managers who have directly supervised you in the past and/or colleagues who can speak to your work.

If you have a disability or special need that requires accommodation, please let us know by completing this form, and we will reach out soon to see how we may be able to assist.
