Instructional Designer / Technical Writer at honeycomb.io
This role is focused on building learning paths into the developer experience. Primarily, this role will own redesigning of our product documentation site and develop workshop training materials. You will help ensure that our developer learning experience is well suited to beginners and experts alike.
If you have a passion for creating fun, engaging, and thorough learning solutions for highly technical products and enjoy working cross-functionally to deliver impactful onboarding experiences, then this might be the opportunity for you.
This role is a great fit for someone who:
Is equal parts technical writer and instructional designer. You value developing clear, thorough, effective documentation. But you also like finding creative ways to make that content stick to the minds of your audience. You will own redesigning our docs and leveraging the same learning paths you build there to create material for training workshops. You don’t have to be a technical expert (bonus points if you are), but you’ll collaborate with many technical experts contributing highly technical content. You’ll be learning your way through our product and then teaching others to do the same.
Has an exceptionally detailed eye organizing a large volume of complex subjects into structures that are discoverable and easy to navigate. Librarians are your kindred spirits because you both know how to take overwhelming amounts of content and make classifications that make it approachable by experts and laypersons alike.
Is well versed in owning developer documentation sites and working with multiple technical contributors to ensure content has a consistent style and tone. You can work with static site generators (e.g. Hugo or similar) and GitHub pull requests. But you don’t just accept contributions, you also look for opportunities to make new content engaging — by adding graphics, visualizations, or narratives that boost learning comprehension — and take ownership of making that work happen. You’re an entrepreneurial self-starter, but also team-oriented.
Is obsessed with understanding the needs of their audience and thrives by getting direct feedback by talking to them. You want to not only understand what’s working and what’s not working, you won’t stop until you know exactly why. Nothing makes your day quite like knowing that you helped someone learn and improve their craft. You’re constantly finding new ways to make it easier for your audience to understand complex subjects.
Has a track record of developing and delivering workshops. You create the material, you can deliver it (when needed), and you know how to train the trainers. You’re all about understanding how engineers think and finding several ways to share new knowledge with them in a variety of ways.
Likes being a generalist. We’re a small team at Honeycomb, so there will be plenty of opportunities to help with other areas of Developer Relations. You may contribute content for developer marketing initiatives, participate in community events, or contribute to other DevRel initiatives. You’re not required to stretch yourself in this direction but, if you’ve ever had an interest in DevRel, then this role is especially for you.
Is seasoned in the developer tools space. You should have some proven understanding of the needs of developers and you generally understand the needs of B2B SaaS companies. Bonus points for experience maintaining sample apps, working code snippets, or working with data visualizations.
