Community Advocate - Developer Communities at Orbit
Orbit is hiring a community advocate for developer communities to join our User Community team and work with the developer advocates, community managers, and open source maintainers who use Orbit.
We've already seen excellent traction within technical communities, and community teams behind products like CircleCI, Apollo GraphQL, Kubernetes, and others are using Orbit daily.
You'll be undertaking a community manager-esque role with a critical advocacy element. This will not only involve thinking about how to grow Orbit's user community but how to help Orbit's members be more successful in using Orbit to build their own communities, too. On top of that, you'll be the "Customer 0" of the Orbit product, using the tools we are developing to build our user community and provide feedback to the product and engineering teams.
Here are some of the things that you can expect to do:
Working closely with our developer-focused and open-source customers, helping them manage their communities more effectively using Orbit. Empathizing with them to understand their needs and challenges, turning their product feedback into insights for the Product team.
Creating playbooks, instructional videos, and other content that helps developer advocates and community managers deliver better experiences for their technical communities.
Sharing the community-building techniques that are working for us and other community members. Sparking and facilitating conversations in chat, on social media, or speaking at and organizing our own events.
This role will see you teaching the builders who are ushering in the next wave of community-driven products and businesses. You will work with founders and a team who deeply values community folks' work - justifying yourself, your role, or the need for community will not be part of your job at Orbit.
We’re looking for someone with work experience along these lines:
3+ years of experience in developer relations, developer advocacy, developer experience, open-source community building, or a related role where you worked closely with communities of developers.
You've built, managed, and grown one or more technical communities in the past.
You feel comfortable guiding and mentoring others in their approach to building developer communities.
You're an enthusiastic writer and enjoy publishing content and sharing what you're learning.
You've run online or offline events before, particularly meetups or conferences.
You're a whizz with tools like Zapier or Integromat, but you're just as comfortable coding a script or cron job to help automate community workflows.
You enjoy studying technical products and thinking about how to improve them.
You like compiling and looking at data to see what is and isn't working.
If you don’t feel that you meet those qualifications on paper but are still excited about the opportunity, please apply anyway! We believe great talent can come from anywhere, and we know that a resume doesn’t tell the whole story of who you are and what you can do.

The hiring process
We are a young startup, frequently iterating on our interview processes. The specific steps you go through may vary, but for all candidates, we hold the following principles in mind:
Everyone hears back from us, no matter the decision. At Orbit, nobody’s application falls into a black hole.
We respect candidates’ time and energy. We will strive for a 2-3 week interview process, unless you request more time.
We conduct conversational interviews as well as collaboration sessions, which are designed to help you get a sense of what it’s really like to work with our team.
We want everyone, candidates as well as interviewers, to come away feeling positive about the experience. Everyone should feel that they got something out of meeting and exploring the opportunity together, even if an offer isn’t extended or accepted.
And most importantly:
Orbit does not discriminate in employment matters on the basis of race, color, religion, gender identity or expression, national origin, age, military service eligibility, veteran status, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, or any other protected class. We support workplace diversity. In fact, we strongly believe that diversity contributes to a broader collective perspective that will consistently lead to a better company and better products. We are working hard to increase the diversity of our team wherever we can and we actively encourage everyone to consider becoming a part of it.
